Oh, boy. This is the person everyone has a tough opinion of. I’ve seen my fair share of people who totally, undeniably support her and love listening to her music, and more than enough people who can’t stand the sight of her/hearing her voice. I have to say, although I am sort of the latter, I’ll try to extol the virtues of Kusumi Koharu to the best of my ability — but I don’t exactly agree with them.

Let’s tackle the subject of her horrible singing ability above all else. Everyone recognizes Koharu as a crappy singer. Some wonder why Tsunku chose her (I’ll get into the whole “miracle” business here in a second). I happen to be of the mind that Tsunku chose Koharu because her name is cool and he felt Morning Musume was lacking a special-ed girl.
…well, not precisely. I can’t say why he specifically chose her on her own to be the seventh generation. Tsunku’s reasoning is frequently mysterious and also bullshit, but he probably understands the “biz” better than all of us, so maybe we should stop questioning him all the time. In my case, I think he chose Koharu because she would prove useful in the anime field only a short time later, and that, although listening to her sing is the equivalent of stepping on a cat and placing a microphone next to its mouth as it shrieks in pain and I heavily enjoy visualing a red laser dot on her forehead in this performance of “Furusato”, her music is a guilty pleasure for me. It’s so bad, it’s good. And that’s special.
I must say, I’m pretty okay with who Koharu is right now. I don’t really need her to change, just to GTFO of Morning Musume. She’s at that ripe “miracle” age of graduation — follow in Maki’s footsteps, Koharu! Mankind will thank you later when you stop weighing down Momusu’s music with your subpar vocals as you get lead positions and gobs of solo lines on each single release!
She doesn’t have much of personality. She’s just a crackhead. I love her when I watch old things like a Musume DOKYU! episode featuring her playing games and bumbling like an idiot because it was genuine and almost sort of endearing. Nowadays, she’s made a personality out of being hyperactive and annoying as fuck and, to be honest, that isn’t really much of a personality. At least, not much of a good one. It’s a bit unfortunate that I’ve come to see her as Morning Musume’s special little sister instead of a real idol who can be taken seriously — but then again, Koharu’s persona right now isn’t much about “seriousness”. Therefore, I don’t feel as bad. When she’s seventeen and we start seeing more normalcy out of her (again, this is theoretical)… Yeah, that’d be good, but where will her personality go? It’s as if she’s entirely dependant on her youth, and when that runs out, what should we expect, a Miki clone?

And as for her solo career… I must confess, it’s extremely difficult for me to take any anime music career seriously. I only recently (read: a few hours ago) began to accept Buono as something long-term, all thanks to the fact that there’s a track on their upcoming album titled “Rock no Kamisama”, or in English, “God of Rock”. Koharu hasn’t earned my respect yet, and as long as Hello! Project continues to influence Kirarin☆Revolution beyond all recognition and Koharu continues to fail musically, I can’t see this changing. I still enjoy some of her music because of the aforementioned guilty pleasure note, but that’s just what it is and just what Koharu as an idol is to me: Fun, yet never serious. I was rather surprised to find this picture from her photobook POP, and that doesn’t even look like Koharu. In the “Furusato” performance, she is all smiles (though, to be fair, so is Lin), she can’t stop striking a pose or two, etc. I would have loved an eighth generation-specific “Furusato”, or maybe even a Junjun and Linlin duet (they get their duet, “Suki na Senpai”, in Momusu’s 2007 fall tour, the DVD of which is supposed to be released on the 13th of next month) of the damn song, but somehow, Koharu manages to invade that wonderful concept. And it’s sad that I view her as “invading” anyway.
This girl is an excellent card. She’s an ace, like Maki was, but for different reasons. She’s useful. Koharu’s ties to that anime are deeply embedded at this point, thus ensuring her some very, very nice sales and also generates interest in Morning Musume, as her singing roles as Tsukishima Kirari are credited as “Tsukishima Kirari starring Kusumi Koharu (Morning Musume)”. It’s not because she was billed as a miracle or an ace that she’s in the front of the covers of “Mikan” or gets more solo lines than other members even with her terrible vocals, but so that little girls who watch Kirarin☆Revolution will look at the CD, go “IT’S TSUKISHIMA KIRARI OMFG MOMMY BUY IT FOR ME”, and thus help bolster Momusu’s sales as well. Momusu isn’t doing good on the Oricon. They haven’t been since 2004. Unfortunately, little girls are probably only interested in the Kirariharu factor and view the other Musume as excess baggage, which explains why “Mikan” did so miserably, and why pushing Koharu to the forefront probably isn’t gonna work out so well.

We’ll see.
Prey tell who /does/ have a personality? Sayumi’s narcissistic with sporadic spurts of a truly devious girl, Eri lost hers on the street somewhere, Junjun likes bananas and cries – can we count that? Sure? Okay, that makes two. Reina has not yet learned that winking does not constitute a personality, her yankeeness did. Takahashi has got to be the most boring musume in the history of boring musume and Niigaki’s mild irritability is only rarely seen and again, not really a personality. Aika’s cheerful and thoughtful and a bit weird.
That makes two.
I’ll take Koharu’s. At least it’s better than watching Tofuhashi. Then, when singing starts they can just trade. Between the two of them it’s almost like one complete idol…
Sigh.
When I first found out about Kusumi Koharu (although I’ve liked Momusu for a long time, I found out about their newer songs sometime in 2007), I really liked her. Balalaika was good, and I kinda thought Hana wo Puun was cool. It had a cuteness factor, but had this undertone I cannot describe which didn’t make it obnoxious to me. And because I wasn’t used to the cuteness factor you talk about in Momusu, it was refreshing. I also liked the fact that she idolized Yossui, and wanted to be a tomboy like her.
Nowadays I don’t really like her as much, and I think it’s only because she has to be the face of everything. Not only that, but her new songs aren’t good (exception: Anataboshi), and she antagonized me in the video of Resonant Blue, since she was in the forefront, unlike 2/3’s the group, even though like them, SHE DIDN’T EVEN SING!!!!!!
I just want her to even out. Using couplings to their full extent in singles from now on would certainly help that cause, and it appears to be that Kusumi is having to make less and less of those obnoxious sounds (it’s those sound effects from her that I hate the most, since they’re really, really annoying), and her songs might be on the rise.
One last thing: I can’t believe you called her “special ed”! I was laughing histarically at that, but still…
God people like you just piss me off to no end, just so you know….
Wow, talk about badmouthing, this girl is by far the cutest most pure looking being to ever step foot into the hallowed halls of what we call Hello! Project. You simply angered me with your outright rude statements on this angel whom we call Koharu Kusumi. Her voice is indeed special, it isn’t bad at ALL actually, it is a very unique style which emphasizes her cuteness, which imho needs no emphasis. I am sorry I ran accross your little elitist blog where you ruthlessly attack one of the earth’s foremost symbols of happiness.
Grr…. >.< and you dare call her "Special Ed"? Are you kidding me? Have you never watched Hello! Morning? Oh and her ability as a Seiyuu is like a cat having it’s tail stepped on? Oh so anotherwords you hate her because she doesn’t sound like virtually EVERY OTHER JAPANESE GIRL? You have problems with accepting individuallity and obviously your fascist idealism needs therapy.
Good Day Sir/Madam..

Furious… just Furious…
@Leonheart:
Beauty is judgmental. So what if the author doesn’t see her as ‘divine’ as you do, do you have to cry a hissy fit about it? Personally, I like her face, but to the point as to call her
“cutest most pure looking being to ever step foot into the hallowed halls of what we call Hello! Project.”
is plain bullsh*t.
“Her voice is indeed special, it isn’t bad at ALL actually, it is a very unique style which emphasizes her cuteness, which imho needs no emphasis.”
Are you on crack? No wait, don’t answer that question, have you actually listened to other singers asides from her?
Because my dear man, if you think that Koharu’s voice is SPECIAL, I believe a trip to your ENT is needed and immediately!
“Oh so anotherwords you hate her because she doesn’t sound like virtually EVERY OTHER JAPANESE GIRL?”
Excuse me, a little revision I think is needed in that sentence. Koharu’s voice, unfortunately, no matter how ‘lovely’ it might sound to your ears, does not DIFFER from any other jpop idol her age. Try AKB48’s singers. That, or evidently you need to clean your ears.
“You have problems with accepting individuallity and obviously your fascist idealism needs therapy.”
Wrong. The problem is she has NO INDIVIDUALITY that’s what makes her the total byproduct from ripped off cookie cutter templates of kawaii girls. Simply put, she is a boring clone. And I fail to see what’s fascist with this entry when in no way does the author even attempt to force you to submit to his/her views. The author merely presented their opinion.
You have a right to your’s but I have a right to think it’s f*cking STUPID.
Ferventlybreathless-
So I share my opinion and therefore I am doing something wrong while the author insulted this girl immensely? You are ridiculous. Not to mention, your examples of why she is a poor artist is ridiculous as well. I have listened to every Momusu song and in every one that she has been inolved in, I can pick her voice out with no problem. I love her voice, it is adoreable in my opinion.
As for her face, it is beautiful. Her persona whether there is any basis in fact in how she truly acts on a day to day basis is wonderful.
“Beauty is judgmental. So what if the author doesn’t see her as ‘divine’ as you do, do you have to cry a hissy fit about it?”
I didn’t “Cry” or have a “hissy fit”. I am however, defensive over Koharu Chan.
“Are you on crack? No wait, don’t answer that question, have you actually listened to other singers asides from her?”
Oh, I donno, I have been listening to a wide variety of female Jpop vocalists since I got into the genre in about 1998 and I have primarilly been listening to that instead of mainstream music ever since. So yeah, for about 10 years I have listened to singers like Ayumi Hamazaki, Koda Kumi, Megumi Hayashibara, Namie Amuro, and so many more. I saw Do as infinity at their first US performance. Nami Tamaki as well come to think of it.
I am very schooled on the topic, personally I think she has an amazing voice. I don’t need to see an ENT, you just need to stop judging her ability based on the exact sound you are used to from most other Jpop singers. Especially Morning Musume where about half of them sound exactly the same. Although I admit some stuck out real well in the past such as Aibon, Tsuji, Yossie, Gocchin, and well yeah there were a few others but I am short of names to throw out off the top of my head.
Anyway, we have the right to our opinions, but lets not be so harsh about it. Koharu is talented to me, if you don’t agree then don’t insult the poor girl’s intelligence and overall character.
@ Leonheart: In what way do I have difficulties accepting individuality? I stated several times throughout the article that in some confusing way, I do appreciate Koharu’s presence, but I do not altogether enjoy her as an idol. Look at my choice of “favorite idols”: Ishiguro Aya, Sudou Maasa, Goto Maki, Iida Kaori… Just those four are not your completely run-of-the-mill Japanese pop personalities. I respect the fact that you’ve been so invested in the ’scene’ for as long as your say you have, but most of the singers/bands you used to emphasize that fact are not at all impressive to me (and I must admit, I rofl’d when you misspelled Hamasaki Ayumi’s name) seeing as they’ve each had works featured in anime. It’s not as if you’re that hardcore, so you essentially have nothing to backup the street cred you claim to possess on idols/idoling. I’m not dismissing your opinion, but at the moment it doesn’t really matter that much to me; it really seems like you were bored and felt like attacking me with your Koharu wota-ness and I don’t appreciate your presence on my blog. It’s negative, which I have no issues with negativity (my blog is built off that), but yours is just…flagrant and ridiculous.
@ ferventlybreathless: I appreciate that you decided to come to my defense, but it’s not entirely necessary because it only provokes him further and allows the argument some room to escalate, which is unneeded. My blog has been pretty dormant for a while, but I do notice what occurs in the comments on my aged articles and, while we have no traffic here whatsoever, I still don’t care for people getting into digital spats over something as trivial as Japanese pop singers.
I have very little time to deal with this, so I hope both of you (if either return here) decide to drop it and go about your business.
Fair enough, I expressed my opinion. Koharu is AWESOME! (Hey look this is a positive comment). :)
Otherwise, very nice blog you have here. I ran across it if I remember correct when I was looking up Koharu in google.
I am not too concerned about your opinion on my “street cred” because we don’t know each other and I do tend to mispell Ayu-chan’s name a lot. I always forget if it is a Z or S especially.
Do take care of yourself and happy blogging.
